Jamie Laval, master fiddler from America, will be returning to Nomad Beat on 21/22 October. Last year he visited Nomad Beat to teach and perform and was well enjoyed by students, staff, and audiences alike. This year Jamie returns to offer an in-depth weekend of traditional music tailored to students of all abilities, along with a concert performance on Sunday afternoon 4:00 pm in the elegant Tontine Hotel, High Street, Peebles (details at www.JamieLaval.com/events).

The weekend begins at 10:00 AM on the Saturday with a class geared for early learning fiddle students. Jamie will teach two fun, easy traditional fiddle tunes giving students an introduction into the basics of Celtic style music with its perky, toe-tapping rhythms and fun, inclusive approach to music making. Jamie will also give remedial instruction on the mechanics and foundational skills of playing fiddle with good tone, perfect intonation, and ergonomic, pain-free posture.

At 2:00 PM on the Saturday, Jamie will meet with students of all instruments. Students of all levels will take home something valuable from this multi-instruments class which will focus on specific skills of playing in a group, how to devise interesting and exciting arrangements of traditional music, how to start a band, how to perform in public, how to get the most enjoyment from community tunes sessions.

On Sunday from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM Jamie will present a workshop for intermediate level fiddlers – although beginners and advanced players are welcome and will definitely benefit from this class. Jamie will teach the specific elements that make tunes sound authentically Celtic. Bowing patterns, ornaments, rhythmic nuances to give tunes rhythmic vitality will be explored, as well as how to practice efficiently for maximum results, the harmonic structure of melodies, and how to devise interesting accompaniments for traditional tunes.
